Chapter 40. Occupy Sla! Lynn Conquered But Did Not Trample!

The half beast warriors heard Lynn’s order, and by their bloodthirsty nature they rushed into the fray. The original plan was to open the city’s gate, but the soldiers behind it did not dare to join the battle. The archers were shooting desperately with some hitting the half beast army. Yet, this did not affect the beasts’ offensive.

Holding onto the arrows that pierced their bodies, the warriors rushed the gate and entered the archers’ blind spot. At the same time, Ino sent out the soldiers who were trying to escape death, but they were massacred by Lynn’s army. The nobles who rejected Lynn before had sweaty palms from the sight before them. However, there was a hint of excitement and appreciation in Theresa’s eyes.

The routed soldiers were cleaned up, but the war had yet to end. Lynn was standing among a pile of his enemies’ corpses out of the range of the archers. His eyes were fixated on the city wall. The half beast warriors were at the gate while leaning against the wall to avoid being shot by the archers. Ino seemed to be clutching on his last hope, and shouted orders.

“Shoot them! Do not let even one live! If they dare come through, shoot them to death! They cannot get up! Show no fear!”

Lynn made a gesture to his mortar team, motioning for them to move forward. The opponent’s vanguard had been destroyed, so the warriors who were responsible for throwing the stones could advance to a position where they could hit the walls. The warriors marched slowly with the stones in hand, and it dawned on the archers what Lynn’s plan was. They became so frightened that they could barely hold onto their bows.

The archers looked at the boulders in the hands of the warriors, and they could not imagine what destructive power the massive rocks would have when they landed. “Throw!” Lynn commanded in a deep voice.

A number of stones were thrown directly at the city wall, and the archers watched as dozens of boulders arched in the sky towards them.

“Run!”

“Stop fighting! I am not fighting!”

The defensive line on the Eastern wall was completely crushed. Huge stones smashed into the wall with a great strength, and a sound that shook the minds of any who heard it. The wall was made of mud bricks which made it sturdy. So, it withstood a single blow from a boulder without collapsing. Yet, dozens more followed the first and slammed into the wall.

The accuracy of the half beast warriors was excellent as almost all of the boulders hit the same area. In the end, a gaping hole was left in place of a wall. Many of the civilians’ houses were also destroyed from the destructive power of the boulders. Now, the warriors could cross into the city and begin their attack. However, Lynn was not in a hurry.

“Throw!” He continued.

Another wave of boulders struck, and the nobles beside the battlefield looked at the scene in dissatisfaction.

“He has not launched a charge yet? Is the war not over?”

“I cannot understand either. If they would just rush into the fight, how happy I would have been. Now, I have to waste time here.”

“This is a war!” Theresa snorted coldly. “This is not entertainment for you! Lynn is the commander in chief, not some clown performing for you! The long ranged attacks reduced the enemy’s strength and morale while avoiding his own army’s casualties. Do not tell me you cannot understand this?”

The nobles did not dare to utter a single word after that. The boulder throws were now completed leaving the entire East wall in tatters. The enemy had almost lost all fighting spirit, so Lynn gave his next order.

“Go on the offensive! Capture Ino Sla and his family!”

The half beast warriors rushed into the city at his command, and Lynn decided to join them. The Sla City Legion had almost been completely wiped out, while the archers had suffered a mass amount of casualties. Even if the soldiers survived, they had no moral to fight.

The Half Beast Legion captured Ino Sla with smooth movements as he was about to escape. Lynn entered the city and stood on the street, where Ino was brought to him. He was forced to kneel before Lynn, while the other Sla family members were arrested. Ino looked at Lynn in horror and wanted to beg for mercy.

The onlooking nobles also came over while the civilians circled around the scene in horror. Just before Ino spoke, Lynn stepped forward and broke his neck with his own hands. He did not give him a chance to plead for mercy. The other Sla family members were rapidly killed by the half beast warriors, leaving corpses on the ground.

The civilians shivered in fear while the nobles had confusion on their face. If they had been in Lynn’s place and Ino was caught offending them, they would have forced him to beg for mercy and humiliated him. Then, they would kill him. Yet, Lynn did not embarrass Ino, which the nobles did not understand. Lynn ignored them and addressed the commoners.

”Remember my name, for I am Lynn! Starting today, I am the master of this city! As of now, Sla City will have its name officially changed to Maple Leaf City! All civilians are allowed to live normally, and all caravans may conduct business as usual! My legion will not act out so long as you do not violate the laws of the Empire! I have conquered this city, but I will not insult anyone whether they be Ino or you!”

Theresa showed a dazed expression, but the appreciation in her eyes could not be hidden. To conquer but not insult. Victory without trampling. For a moment, Theresa felt that Lynn had the qualities of a king. A king that would conquer the entire Quartet!
